  1.                            EXPOSITION.
  2.  
  3.         "_The Lord liveth_." Possessing underived, essential,
  4. independent and eternal life. We serve no inanimate, imaginary,
  5. or dying God. He only hath immortality. Like loyal subjects let
  6. us cry, Live on, O God. Long live the King of kings. By thine
  7. immortality do we dedicate ourselves afresh to thee. As the Lord
  8. our God liveth so would we live to him. "_And blessed be my
  9. rock_." He is the ground of our hope, and let him be the subject
  10. of our praise. Our hearts bless the Lord, with holy love
  11. extolling him.

  13.         Jehovah lives, my rock be blest!
  14.         Praised be the God who gives me rest!
  15.  
  16.         "_Let the God of my salvation be exalted_." As our
  17. Saviour, the Lord should more than ever be glorified. We should
  18. publish abroad the story of the covenant and the cross, the
  19. Father's election, the Son's redemption, and the Spirit's
  20. regeneration. He who rescues us from deserved ruin should be very
  21. dear to us. In heaven they sing, "Unto him that loved us and
  22. washed us in his blood;" the like music should be common in the
  23. assemblies of the saints below.

  25.               EXPLANATORY NOTES AND QUAINT SAYINGS.

  27.         Verse 46.--"_The Lord liveth: and blessed be my rock; and
  28. let the God of my salvation be exalted_."--Let us unite our
  29. hearts in this song for a close of our praises. Honours _die_,
  30. pleasures _die_, the world _dies_; but "_The Lord liveth_." My
  31. flesh is as _sand_; my fleshly life, strength, glory, is as _a
  32. word written on sand_; but "_blessed be my ROCK_." Those are for
  33. a moment; this stands for ever. The curse shall devour those;
  34. everlasting blessings on the head of this. Let outward salvations
  35. vanish; let the saved be crucified; let the "_God_" of our
  36. salvations "_be exalted_." This Lord is _my rock_; this God is
  37. _my salvation_.--^Peter Sterry, 1649.

  39.         Verse 46.--"_The Lord liveth_." Why do you not oppose one
  40. God to all the armies of evils that beset you round? why do you
  41. not take the more content in God when you have the less of the
  42. creature to take content in? why do you not boast in your God?
  43. and bear up yourselves big with your hopes in God and
  44. expectations from him? Do you not see young heirs to great
  45. estates act and spend accordingly? And, why shall you, being the
  46. King of heaven's son, be lean and ragged from day to day, as
  47. though you were not worth a groat? O sirs, live upon your
  48. portion, chide yourselves for living besides what you have. There
  49. are great and precious promises, rich, enriching mercies; you may
  50. make use of God's all-sufficiency; you can blame none but
  51. yourselves if you be defective or discouraged. A woman, truly
  52. godly for the main, having buried a child, and sitting alone in
  53. sadness, did yet bear up her heart with the expression, "God
  54. lives"; and having parted with another, still she redoubled,
  55. "Comforts die, but God lives." At last her dear husband dies, and
  56. she sat oppressed and most overwhelmed with sorrow. A little
  57. child she had yet surviving, having observed what before she
  58. spoke to comfort herself, comes to her and saith, "Is God dead,
  59. mother? is God dead?" This reached her heart, and by God's
  60. blessing recovered her former confidence in her God, who is a
  61. _living_ God. Thus do you chide yourselves; ask your fainting
  62. spirits under pressing outward sorrows, is not God alive? and why
  63. then doth not thy soul revive? why doth thy heart die within thee
  64. when comforts die! Cannot a living God support thy dying hopes?
  65. Thus, Christians, argue down your discouraged and disquieted
